To live through a home renovation

Todd Gehrls of Donahue, Iowa, was the general
contractor on our recent home improvement project.

The process of renovating several baths while you live in a home can be tricky. It also provides a challenge and is fun, not to mention rewarding.

The most important step is to hire a nice, talented general contractor. The person we found was Todd Gehrls. Gehrls is a busy guy but once he got to our house he was Johnny-on-the-spot, arriving at the appointed hour and working hard throughout the days involved.

The rural Donahue, Iowa, resident works steadily in this part of Iowa. We are happy he agreed to tackle small projects like three dated baths in our house.

    He is one valuable contractor.

We started the renovation process in December, 2021, with a visit from one of the subcontractors. The KBD designer measured cabinets and took notes.

The project got going in September 2022 when Gehrls arrived early one morning to pull out the shower in the master bath. This was quite a job, but he was all ready. with a large trailer to haul the debris away.

We were frankly impressed by the work of the subcontractors involved, all of whom were friendly, and did things like removed their shoes at the door when feasible. They were quite informative, as well, with my many questions on how the new items worked, and how best to clean them.

The were some effects from the pandemic, of course. I picked out two mirrors from hundreds of mirrors in a local store. Come to find out, these mirrors actually originated somewhere else. It took until January, 2023, to get the right mirrors delivered and put in place.

There didn't seem to be much COVID-19 impact beyond that. Some items we chose were a specific color but they all arrived as expected.

Many people complain about having construction work done inside the home but I thought it was wonderful.

One time the drills got a bit loud. I just chowed on chocolate as a coping mechanism.

Some people say having the kitchen re-done is the most difficult project in a home but that's not on our agenda. We have various other projects in mind, and know just who to call for the work.

After, in the guest bath (before mirror arrived)
